✨THE STORY✨
Ancestral Tlazolteotl With Modern Traits for the Descendants
Tlazolteotl has been a reemergent figure since my early 20s. Tlazolteotl “the eater of filth” also known as the goddess of purification, illicit sexual acts, fertility, cotton, overindulgence, and pardoner of exorbitance. Having origins in Mexico, she’s been adored by the Mexica, Huastecs, Mixtecs, as well as the Olmecs. Being the cycle of life and death, there are many images of her defecating, purging blood, flying on a broom, and giving birth.
Having struggled with an eating disorder and body-image issues most of my life, I have been drawn to Tlazolteotl unrestrained lurid appearance and unapologetic embodiment of disgust. Tlazolteotl's ability to transform filth (trauma, shame, pain) to regeneration has continuously drawn me to her. I have found solace and refuge in Tlazolteotl during my struggle with bulimia. Tlazolteotl is the alleviator, she absorbs our impurities and pain. She frees us from the urges to engage in eating disorder behavior and guides us to our own rebirth.
